Wassail!

Wassail! (Be you healthy!) I joined in the Twelfth Night Celebrations down by the Thames today. The Holly Man (the winter version of the Green Man) came along the river and joined a bunch of leaf-clad folk for a song and a dance. It was quite crowded, and I couldn’t follow all that was going on, but it was quite fun! They performed a mummers play (read more about mummers plays), and then crowned King Bean and Queen Pea. All very bizarre and English, making me feel somewhat like a tourist in my own country – which is always a good thing! You can read more about the celebrations on the Lions Part website.
